Simple Steps to Refinishing Kitchen Cabinets

On occasion, due to lack of funds, time or resources, many homeowners settle to refinish their existing kitchen cabinets. Before refinishing kitchen cabinets, it’s important to ensure that your kitchen cabinets are strong so they may last another 5 or 10 years. So that refinishing them is worthwhile.

It is important to make sure that the bottoms of your existing kitchen cabinets are dry, and free from rot. Before refinishing kitchen cabinets, look under the sink or near dishwashers, as they may show the most signs of wear and tear. If the bottoms of your cabinets are rotten, they need to be replaced. This should be done before starting your project to refinish. If your shelves are also affected, they will need to be replaced as well.

The exterior, interior, and handles of the cabinets need to be cleaned thoroughly. Wipe your cabinets until all grime accumulated over the years (if any) is all gone. After wiping up all surface dust and grime, you can also use sandpaper to lightly penetrate embedded gunk. Doing this is very important as you could leave marks and  blemishes which will show through your finished result.

Before removing your cabinet doors and hardware, label each component so it can be put back in it’s exact spot after refinishing. Then after all cabinet doors, handles, and shelves are removed it’ll be time to sand off the old paint and varnish so you may apply new. Don’t forget you’ll want to paint 2 and sometimes 3 layers of paint or varnish. Sanding, painting, or varnishing the interiors, face frames, and sides will also be needed. Once all done air dry your wonderfully new looking Cabinets for about 24 hours before use.

In order to replace the doors, a carpenter’s expertise is essential. It should be ensured that the doors shut properly. This provides a new look to the cabinet without having to go in for a major or expensive makeover.
