Obtaining Cheap Or Free Lumber

When building a dog house from wood, it’s important to use the right species. Much of the lumber available at your local lumber yard is very susceptible to water and wood rot. You need to go for either treated pine, or a naturally resistant species like cedar.

Of course, there are many more ways to obtain good quality timber for your big dog kennel. Perhaps your neighbors have some bits and pieces that you can use. Also, be sure to ask friends and family if you can go through their “junk” heap. Old furniture is great, and try to find some plywood for the interior walls.

Even though building a dog kennel is one of the easier DIY projects, there are a few things you will require, such as a saw, a hammer, nails, and a non-toxic adhesive. You might also like to attach some sun reflecting metal panels to the roof to keep your pet cool.
